From Broadway musicals, to Rock and Roll arenas, trade shows and conferences, the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees (IATSE) local 251 provides safe and skilled laborers in the field of stagecraft, audio visual, lighting and theatrical production. Since 1912, as an established branch of the National IATSE union, Local 251 supports art, music and theatres in Madison and Southern Wisconsin.
About
The International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees, Moving Picture Technicians, Artists and Allied Crafts of the United States, Its Territories and Canada was founded in 1893 when representatives of stagehands working in eleven cities met in New York and pledged to support each others’ efforts to establish fair wages and working conditions for their members. Our union has evolved over the succeeding 130 years to embrace the development of new entertainment mediums, craft expansion, technological innovation and geographic growth.
Today the IATSE is the largest union representing workers in the entertainment industry. Our members work in all forms of live theater, motion picture and television production, trade shows and exhibitions, television broadcasting, and concerts as well as the equipment and construction shops that support all these areas of the entertainment industry. We represent virtually all the behind the scenes workers in crafts ranging from motion picture animator to theater usher.

Certifications
Certifications are one way to increase your value as a stagehand. Some jobs require certification to prove that you have received valuable safety information regarding the operation of equipment. Certifications do not necessarily prove familiarity with the equipment and it may take some practice to be able to operate a piece of equipment comfortably and independently.
Some recommended certifications help you to be a better co-worker. Mental Health First Aid and First Aid/CPR/AED training are recommend for everyone to increase our capacity to handle emergencies as they arise.
Equipment Certifications
- MEWPS – Also known as Mobile Elevated Work Platforms, including Scissor Lifts, Boom Lifts, and Single Person Lifts (Genie lifts)
- IATSE 251 has two trainers that occasionally offer classes
- Sunbelt and other manufacturers offer certification classes in person
- While several online certifications exist, these do not provide skills testing on the piece of equipment

The IATSE Training Trust Fund has created OSHA 10 classes that pertain more to stage work than the regular classes. The IATSE Stagecraft Department has recommended that all stage workers take an OSHA 10 course. OSHA 30 courses are generally targeted at supervisors, which would include stewards, heads, and touring personnel.
